Kargil is an important town in western Ladakh, situated along historic routes connecting Srinagar, Leh and the surrounding mountain valleys. The region is characterised by rugged landscapes, river valleys and a distinctive cultural mix. Kargil is often used as an overnight stop on journeys between Srinagar and Leh and also provides access to remote villages and valleys in western Ladakh.
