Jaisalmer is one of Rajasthan’s most distinctive desert cities, rising from the Thar Desert in a landscape of golden sandstone. Founded in the 12th century by Rawal Jaisal, the city developed as an important trading centre on historic caravan routes and is best known for its living fort, ornate havelis and desert surroundings. The old city is filled with narrow lanes, carved façades, temples, rooftop views and traditional markets.
